Hello, my name’s Laura. I am an award-winning non-fiction writer with bylines in publications such as Hidden Scotland, The Scots Magazine, Passion Passport and more. My photography has also been featured online by The Guardian, BBC Britain, Culture Trip and many others.
My work explores the places where nature and social media meet, and questions how we might travel more consciously in a changing world. I also write about seasonal shifts and the local environment, such as the easterly sea fog or ‘haar’ near my home that’s inspired the name of this website.
Over the last decade, I’ve collaborated with brands and organisations to tell stories from Scotland, the country I call home. They include VisitScotland, The National Trust for Scotland, and Scotland Is Now, the country’s international marketing initiative.
In 2021 my first non-fiction essay collection, Place Notes, was shortlisted in a worldwide call for submissions by indie publisher The Emma Press.
When I’m not outdoors somewhere in Scotland (which is always where I’d rather be) you’ll find me reading with a coffee, dreaming up ideas for a new book, or less often on Instagram.
I share blog posts on Hill & Haar around once a month. Usually they’re about local adventures, noticing seasonal changes on my doorstep in Scotland, or exploring how we might travel more meaningfully in our digital age. You can subscribe here.
It’s lovely to have you here. Thank you for visiting my little corner of the internet.
